The current work combines both educational approaches. The foundation is laid by the studies at the Freiburg University of Education. The focus of the efforts is reform pedagogy. It leaves behind the didactic linearity in which teaching is directly considered to be the cause of learning and points to the importance of student participation. The second educational pillar is systemic pedagogy. The subjective development processes of teachers and learners are placed at the center of successful education because systemic pedagogy recognizes the importance of self-organization as the logic of the living. It departs from the naive notion of simple knowledge transfer and turns against the seemingly endless drama of mediation pedagogy and the qual of being taught. This changed pedagogy distances itself from the linear concept of education and places conscious and reflective relational pedagogy at the center of action.
Studying at the Freiburg University of Music forms the foundation for the subject-didactic perspectives and interdisciplinary facets of music.
Where music and pedagogy truly come together, the question „What is music?“ becomes „What should music achieve?“. Right at the beginning of a music degree, it becomes apparent that mere technical training cannot do justice to an all-encompassing concept of education. Instrumental pedagogy in particular carries a heavy burden—right up to the present day—stemming from the deeply rooted art of moulding children in a technical sense. Coupled with monocultures in teaching methodology, a large proportion of traditionally anchored music-pedagogical thinking cannot keep pace with the emergence and upheaval of new educational reforms regarding music and culture.
We cannot solve the plagues and adversities of our current music education with the same ways of thinking that caused them. For a truly successful and holistic musical education, „rethinking“ therefore becomes a mandatory task for teachers.
